I know I’m not the only one who desires to be a great wife and mother someday. Although being a family woman is not for everyone…God has instilled deep within each and every one of us the ability to nurture and nourish; it’s s natural part of being a woman!
The woman depicted in Proverbs 31 is the ideal “perfect” christian after God’s heart. (DISCLAIMER: No I do not think she was literally perfect, because, like, nobody’s perfect but you get where I’m going with this). In every area of her life she is the true reflection of a daughter of the Most High God. I have to be honest, the first time I read this proverb I immediately began to feel intimidated by this “wonder woman”. She was everything I desired to be, yet I felt as though I possessed none of her loving qualities. It was discouraging! I had to continue growing deeper in my faith before realizing that the outward qualities this woman possessed was not what made her admirable, it was her heart. Because her heart was pure and full of love and fear of the Lord, she had the virtuous qualities that manifested in every area of her life, thus making her so amazing.
I was, and still am, determined to be like her! The first thing I asked God to do was change my heart and teach me to be more like this woman.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
Jesus tells us that if we ask, we shall receive (Matthew 7:7). But first, we need to know what exactly we’re asking for. Let’s break down this mystery queen…
She is an excellent wife (v. 10)
The writer of this Proverb, believed to be King Solomon, proclaimed that having an excellent wife is far more precious than jewels. As we dig deeper into the proverbs 31 woman we will discover more qualities of a good wife.
She is a hard worker (v. 13)
Just because we’re women does not mean we don’t have to work hard. In whatever we do, we are to do it diligently. Whether it is our job, keeping our homes clean, or our involvement in ministry, we must work hard.
She is strong (v. 17)
A virtuous woman has intellectual, mental, and even physical strength. She is the protecter of her home. She will not allow discord and disunity to enter her sanctuary. She protects it at all costs.
She is generous to the poor and to those in need (v. 20)
She offers her time and resources cheerfully. She is not selfish and she has a strong desire to help those who need it.
She dresses modestly (v. 22)
I have a post specifically about modesty here. A virtuous woman knows that she can turn heads with her body, but chooses not to because she understands that her body is a sacred temple. She understands that her body should only be seen by her husband, if married, and she doesn’t want to cause other men to lust after her.
She possesses dignity (v. 25)
Dignity: the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect
The virtuous woman deserves honor because in every area of her life she is a pure representation of God’s kingdom. She is an inspiration to all who desire a relationship with God.
She speaks words of wisdom (v. 26)
She speaks words of life and not death. She speaks positivity into the atmosphere. She does not gossip or spread rumors, but is honest and truthful in every word she speaks.
She’s kind (v. 26)
She’s genuinely a nice person, she cares about the well-being of everyone. She encourages others to be the best versions of themselves.
She’s not lazy (v. 27)
She understands that her time is precious, that it is not to be wasted in idleness. Instead, she is productive yet still understanding when it is time to rest.
She’s does not rely solely on her outward beauty (v. 30)
The virtuous woman knows that she’s bad as ever and slays effortlessly. Yet, she knows that more importantly, she has a heart of pure gold. She knows that her mind is force to be reckoned with; she knows that the inner her is what God sees when He looks at her.
Ladies, let’s strive to be like this woman today! If there’s a quality that you see here that you don’t have, write it down. Next to it, write down the steps you can take to possess that quality. Give God time to renew your spirit, don’t get discouraged if you don’t experience changes overnight. Don’t give up if you revert back to your old way of doing things. Be patient and wait on the Lord to transform your heart! ❤
