If you’re looking to up your skincare game and make the shift from manufactured skincare products to all natural, holistic ones instead, you might want to check out the up-and-coming, overnight success DIY skincare company The Melanin Nurse.
This company is expanding…fast. In just four months after launching their online store, entrepreneurs Erica Douglas and Zulfikar Khalil opened their very own store and are now teaching DIY classes! Business is booming, okay? I had to find out their secrets to success, because I know one thing for sure: entrepreneurship AIN’T EASY. But these two are absolutely passionate about changing the skincare game, and I’ve been here for all of it!
I had SUCH a great time talking to Erica and Zulfikar. They are literally so down-to-earth and they had me laughing for most of our conversation! Erica wanted to make one thing clear at the beginning of our interview, “We’re not the average skin care company,” she said. She went on to explain that The Melanin Nurse is ALL about promoting the use of 100% natural products for optimal skin health rather than using manufactured skincare products with ingredients even a college-educated person would struggle to pronounce.
“In many other countries people use plant-based products [for the skin] but most products in America are manufactured. But why don’t we DIY our skin care regimen here?” Erica questioned rhetorically.
She has a point. There are tons of research and expert articles suggesting that many of the ingredients listed on the labels of many skin care products could cause more harm than benefit, such as disrupting the natural pH of the skin, and even cause cancers.
To help remedy this, The Melanin Nurse offers a range of skin care products including handcrafted soaps, bath and body products, and an array of other natural ingredients that can be combined to make everyday skincare items such as moisturizers, facial cleansers, and face masks. I actually LOVE trolling their Instagram page, which I’ll link below. Erica and Z always explain how to mix natural ingredients in order to create everyday skincare products….because how would we actually know how to do these things when we simply go to our local CVS or Sephora to purchase items made in a factory in God knows where..? My favorite of their IG posts is when the duo explains how to make DIY hand sanitizer…who ever thinks to make your own hand sanitizer?? Maybe you all have, but I know I haven’t! But now, I’m totally interested in making my own EVERYTHING because at least I’ll know exactly what I’m putting on my skin.
But Erica hasn’t created this successful business on her own. In fact, she started the business with her boyfriend, Zulfikar. Before the concept of the Melanin Nurse was birthed, they bounced around different ideas about how they can create a space for themselves in the entrepreneur world. He explained to me that entrepreneurship doesn’t feel like work. He’s always been motivated to break through the confines of an average, 9-5 career and become his own boss.
“When I go to the gym, it doesn’t feel like work. This is kind of the same,” he said. “The sky’s the limit. Whatever we put into it will be magnified,” he said.
The couple wants to be an inspiration to others who are venturing into entrepreneurship. They emphasized that while it is a lot of work that goes into owning your own business, the freedom of being your own boss is worth the hassle and toil.
“We simply took a risk, made an investment, and it worked out,” Zulfikar said with a smile.
From our conversation, I could tell that Erica and Z are far from finished. In fact, they are just getting started. They have their own store in San Pedro, California and are also looking forward to adding even more products to their inventory.
“There’s always going to be more [expansion]. We plan to add so many more ingredients, so stay on the lookout because the sky’s the limit!” Erica says.
